ABOUT ROWENA BAINES DOCUMENTARY
I choose the genre of documentary
because I find humans fascinating.
Capturing moments of true connection, emotion and life events that only ever happen once, in an aesthetically pleasing way, results in powerful material that has the power to change perceptions and make positive change. These mostly unfunded heart projects of mine are motivated by the desire to share inspirational stories and amplify the impact of remarkable people and projects from far-away corners of the world. I am also fueled by the opportunity and privilege I have to give voice to marginalised people, who don’t necessarily have the resources to make their voice heard.
My ability to communicate in a number of foreign languages has enabled me to film in remote places such as Vanuatu and the favelas of Brazil. As the journey is important to me, I take time to learn about the world I’m capturing, spending months and sometimes years with people, developing a deep relationship that ensures I represent them fully. These days, production techniques for documenting reality are more captivating than the old fly on the wall approach and I bring to my work the same cinematic, lush, vibrancy that is found at the movie theatre. I have made five short films, which all screened in International Film Festivals and am currently working on two full feature films, which are taking forever, as they are unfunded. Watch this space.
