  • You are based on Waiheke, do I have to come to you?
Not at all, however our island makes a stunning film location! We can meet via Zoom or in person either in Auckland city or on Waiheke island. I’m happy to travel to the location of filming and travel and expenses will be included in the quote.
  • What’s your style?
My filming style and pace of edit ideally reflects the energy of what I am filming, so will vary from project to project. Slow motion shots definitely have their place, when capturing something that happens too fast for the eye to register or appreciate fully and my gimbal allows gentle movement that can really add to a piece. These days, production techniques for documenting reality are more captivating than the old fly on the wall approach and I bring to my work the same cinematic, lush, vibrancy that is found at the movie theatre.
  • How big is your team?
More often than not, I am a one wo-man band. There are so many advantages to this for clients, as I handle each and every part of the process from pre-production to post production, which keeps the cost down greatly. Certain circumstances, however, require working with a soundie or second camera person, and we can discuss this together.
  • How much do you charge?
Once I’ve learned a bit more about your unique plans I can give you a quote, as the production value and length will vary from project to project.
  • What might the ‘extras’ be?
Well this depends on what you want to achieve. If we decide we need drone footage, archive footage, a soundie or a second camera person etc, I can arrange this from external sources and charge for them accordingly.
  • How long before we receive our film?
I am really project based and love to get things edited and delivered while it still feels fresh, however, as I deliver a very high quality product please be aware that the process of filmmaking is long and complex. I’d prefer to discuss your particular project delivery date with you as it depends on a number of variables.
  • What’s the best time of the day for an outdoor shoot?
Ideally we want to use the gentle forgiving light of early morning or evening, an hour or two before sunset, so the time will vary across the seasons. That’s the magic hour. However, if the weather is cloudy it doesn’t really matter what time of the day we film as cloud acts like a giant softbox and provides ideal gentle light for the perfect complexion.
  • Do you include lighting?
I prefer to shoot in natural light, however if lighting is needed to get the best results, we will need to hire it at an additional cost. We can confirm this once the location is established.
  • What about the audio?
A film is only as good as its audio, so I will use a combination of lapel and boom mics for the filming we do. Additional audio or soundtrack will need to be added and we can discuss your requirements during our initial conversation.
  • Will the weather conditions affect my shoot?
Though it’s natural to hope for a blue sky day, the elements actually add to the cinematic experience. Clouds are best for filming skin tones, as you don’t end up with big shadows under the eyes and nose. Wind brings movement to hair and garments and rain, believe it or not, can make stunning images, as it causes gorgeous reflections and the landscape appears lush and rich adding texture to the shots. I always try to incorporate the elements in the shoot rather than hide from them. However, if the weather looks extreme, making sound recording near impossible and the experience unpleasant, we of course would look to reschedule. The benefit of being a one wo-man band is that last minute changes due to unforeseen events, are much easier to organise than they would be if working with a large production team.
  • Who chooses the music for my film?
I will suggest music that enhances the film. A film’s soundtrack has the power to mirror the emotion and pace of the actual events. It’s much more intricate than simply applying a popular song over the top of images. The soundtrack helps weave together the individual moments into one story and the energy it carries needs to add to this.
  • How long will the filming take and will I get all of the footage?
I can answer this complicated question once I hear from you and understand the story you are wanting to tell, as the amount of footage needed to tell your story will differ from case to case. It’s a little like asking ‘How long is a piece of string?’. You can trust me to choose the best footage that pushes your story forward in the edit. If it’s not used, it won’t be passed on to you unless we use it in a future project. If you want access to any raw footage then we can discuss that as an extra.
  • How and when will we receive our film?
Once I’m ready you’ll receive a rough cut to view via Vimeo (an online portal). You will have a change to provide feedback and then I will finalise it. The finished product can be delivered in various formats for various platforms – let’s discuss your needs and preferences. I will always work to any deadline you have as much as I can but remember – good things take time. Though the video may only be for social media use, the standard I deliver it will be fit for the cinema.
  • Can I use the files on social media?
Yes, of course. These are yours to use in social media or elsewhere and you will also receive a downloadable version. Please remember to safely store multiple copies of your finished product across multiple devices and preferably in the cloud.
  • Eek I’m not experienced in video, is this going to work?
That is not a problem – I am. I can offer as much guidance as is needed and will work with you to capture the most natural result, explaining each step and my recommendations as we go. It’s a co-creation. I will use all the strings in my bow to make a beautiful production but it will only be as good as the energy you put into it. The best you can offer your production is time and a willingness to let go of any concerns you have with being on camera and expectations of how things should be.
